Abstract: |
Continuing and extending the successful strategic projects U0-SUPRA and U0-SUPRA++, U0-IVY is the strategic project of the K1 Center’s Research Area U “User-centered Interaction and Visualization”. The project focuses on designing multi-modal interfaces and investigating novel interaction modes that connect the infotope to the human senses as naturally as possible.
IVY conducts theoretical as well as experimental research. Part of the research program deals with methodological advances on user-centric application design and evaluation methods, new modes of user interaction and user behavior, ICT-related innovation processes and sustainable business models. The experimental work is concentrating on the Interfaces and Interactions Lab (iLab) whose main features include advanced in- and out-door equipment for highly specialized user tests in realistic environments ranging from mobile contexts to the connected home, facilities for rapid prototyping and experimental virtual environments as well as testbeds for perceptual quality evaluation.

COM4-BACCARDI - Beyond Architectural Convergence – Charging, SeCurity, Applications, Realization and Demonstration of IMS over fixed and wireless networks

Abstract: |
BACCARDI is the most recent one in a series of NGN-related projects at ftw. including N3-CAMPARI, P4-SIMS and N9-CAIPIRINA. Based on the rich experience and infra-structure created by these predecessor projects, BACCARDI will focus on a broad range of IMS integration aspects which include migration issues, identity management, and overload situation handling from an architectural point of view. Factors which BACCARDI considers to be decisive for NGN acceptance include the definition of novel integrated services and enablers, as well as analysis and provisioning of appropriate security mechanisms as countermeasures to NGN attacks with dedicated focus on Spam over Internet Telephony (SPIT), which is commonly agreed on to be a high risk for NGN success. With increasing number of customers migrating to NGN, service differentiation by means of quality of service will be of paramount importance for positive user experience, same like flexible charging offerings. Finally, integration aspects govern also the planned BACCARDI testbed evolution towards interoperability and inter-connect. A cornerstone of testbed extension will be the integration of existing third-party components for MGCF, MGW and SBC, complemented by feasibility studies and optional development of prototypes for components like RACS and NASS.

SmoothIT - Simple Economic Management Approaches of Overlay Traffic in Heterogeneous Internet Topologies

Abstract: |
The use of mechanisms based on incentives for controlling and managing network traffic of overlay applications in the Internet is still in its early stages. Initial results have shown that such mechanisms do have the important property of scalability with respect to the number of players (i.e. providers, consumers, or peers), and lead to a more efficient network operation. In managing the traffic created and routed through their networks today's ISPs, who may be in more general terms service providers on the basis of the IP, employ methodologies suitable for traditional traffic/service profiles. In the near future most network traffic will follow paths that form logical network overlays at the service layer, such as Virtual Private Networks, Network Management System overlays, or distributed collaboration overlays. As the structure of overlays determines the traffic flows in ISP networks, it is highly efficient for an ISP to influence overlay configuration based on information on their structure. These problems are dealt by the SmoothIT project.

Abstract: |
The strategic objective of the EMANICS Network-of-Excellence (NoE) is to bring together all major research groups in Europe focusing on several aspects of the network and service management plane discipline. The resulting Network of Excellence will work together to structure research and development in the field with the aim of building together the next generation management framework.
In particular WP8 addresses Economic Management. While major factors have been addressed until now in the research community as separated activities, such as achieving technical efficiency of accounting modules, definitions of charging models independent of technological prerequisites, maintaining viable Service Level Management (SLM) aspects, and determining management-independent Internet services models, the inter-operation model of those essential components still remains to be designed. The development of a customer service management architecture and corresponding interfaces as a foundation for the integration for a production environment is essential.

MoMI project models the usage of mobile Internet and business. The business dynamics of the rapidly transforming mobile industry are analyzed with various modeling tools. The project collects empirical data on the Finnish mobile market using novel research methods. Quantitative and qualitative models are constructed based on the data. In particular, emerging consumer Internet services are studied from a techno-economic perspective. The evolution of mobile business models is a central part of our research on new services dynamics. The strengths of the project include the novelty of the used empirical research methods, close collaboration with a high number of Finnish mobile industry partners already committed to the project plan, and collaborative research initiatives with some of the leading universities in the world, including MIT (USA), University of Athens (Greece), Helsinki School of Economics (Finland), Chalmers (Sweden) and WASEDA (Japan). In addition, the project has linkages with InHoNets (Tekes/GIGA), OtaSizzle (TKK), Econ@Tel (COST) and DECICOM (Tekes). The project builds on the results of the LEAD and COIN projects that initiated the longitudinal analysis of the Finnish mobile market in 2004-2007, the value of which is increasing as more datasets become available in the future.

Abstract: |
The Internet has moved from an academic network to a commercial and highly competitive one where providers compete for customers by playing with the price to access service and the Quality of Service (QoS) they offer. There are now different ways to access the network through different technologies, using ADSL, FTTx, telephone network, CDMA wireless network, WiFi or WiMAX among others, with different QoS capabilities. Moreover, the convergence of networks, where Internet access, wired and wireless telephony, television are regrouped into a single network poses additional economic challenges. In this situation, each provider has to adapt its pricing scheme in order to attract customers, to maximize his revenue and/or to allow fairness in the way resources are shared. Pricing has been a hot topic in telecommunication networks during the last decade (due to congestion) and many schemes have been proposed in the literature. On the other hand competition among providers has received very little attention up to now. The goal of this project is to deal with that issue. Indeed, we need to study the distribution of customers among providers as a first level of game, and then to focus on a second higher level, the price and QoS war among providers.

OMEGA will develop a user-friendly home access network capable of delivering high-bandwidth services and content at a transmission speed of one Gigabit per second. The interdisciplinary project consortium consists of 20 European partners from industry and academia. OMEGA is an Integrated Project in the ICT area co-funded by the European Commission under EU Framework Programme 7 (FP7). It is running for three years from January 2008 to December 2010. University of Athens is responsible for the Techno-Economics Studies, aiming to define business scenarios for a technically, economically and socially viable deployment of UBB HANs, enhancing the Europe’s competence in this field. This activity will coordinate the exploitation of existing as well as the development of new research methodologies and models in order to investigate successful business cases. It will also support EU policies by providing guidelines and recommendations to European players (end-users, enterprises, operators, regulators, policy makers, content providers) for the provision of new HAN to citizens and enterprises. The main aim of this project Task is to provide recommendations and guidelines and to support the development of optimal strategies for industry players (operators, vendors, service providers, etc) regarding HAN dynamics and business models.

The overall objective of ECOSYS is to develop a strategic techno-economic analysis framework, apply it on case studies and draw conclusions and recommendations from that. As the technology solutions develop, the entrepreneurial players are needed to take managed risks to make the change happen. ECOSYS will provide them with strategic information to back up their decision-making.
To achieve this, ECOSYS will further develop methodologies for techno-economic evaluation in the telecom sector. The applicability of general investment analysis methodologies and theories to telecom projects is examined and research on new complementary methodologies is carried out, e.g. for more systematic evaluation of OPEX (OPerational EXpenditures), in order to achieve a complete and objective business feasibility analysis. These methodologies will be implemented in a user-friendly software tool for techno-economic evaluation.
ECOSYS will collect and extract information on new and enhanced services and applications for the mobile and fixed broadband networks. Based on extracted information and historical data, ECOSYS will develop models for forecasting traffic and access demand for the described services.
The ECOSYS business case studies will analyse different fixed network solutions, based on copper/fibre/wireless technologies. Also business cases of 3G+ and WLAN networks alongside with the emerging alternative access technologies will be analysed. Finally ECOSYS will analyse the economic feasibility of migration paths towards convergent systems. The strengths and weaknesses of the various system solutions in the different areas and market conditions will be identified and quantified.
ECOSYS core results will be presented as quantitative results related to the viability of envisaged future telecom scenarios. The results will be disseminated via publications in journals and conferences as well as in dedicated conference(s).
